What Is a Church Capital Campaign Feasibility Study?
A feasibility study sometimes called a campaign planning study is a structured research process conducted before a capital campaign launches. Through confidential interviews and congregational surveys, an experienced consultant gathers honest feedback from the people who will drive your campaign's success: major givers, deacons and elders, volunteer leaders, and the most engaged members of your congregation.
The goal is not to get a yes or no answer. The goal is to build a picture of where your church actually stands financially, spiritually, and relationally so that when you launch, your goal is right, your timing is right, and your leadership is ready.
What a feasibility study is not: it is not a rubber stamp, not a fundraising pitch to your congregation, and not a guarantee of success. It is honest intelligence gathered by a neutral third party so your leadership can make the most important financial decision in your church's recent history with open eyes.
Do You Need a Feasibility Study?
Not every church needs a formal feasibility study before launching a capital campaign. But most do and skipping it when you shouldn't has cost churches millions of dollars in missed giving potential and years of organizational setback.
You likely need a feasibility study if…
- Your goal is more than 2× your annual giving
- You're unsure whether your congregation is unified around the vision
- Your board hasn't committed to leading a major ask
- This is your first capital campaign in 5+ years
- You've had internal conflict or pastoral transition recently
- Your project has complex phases or a multimillion-dollar price tag
You may be able to skip it if…
- Your goal is modest (under 1.5× annual giving)
- Your church is small, tight-knit, and deeply unified
- Your senior pastor and top 10 givers are already fully committed
- You've run a successful campaign within the last 3 years
- Your consultant has already done enough listening to advise confidently
Our honest counsel: if you are unsure whether you need a study, you probably need one. The cost of a feasibility study is a small fraction of what a poorly calibrated campaign goal costs a church in lost momentum and strained trust.
How Ascend Conducts a Feasibility Study
Ascend's process is built around 25 years of working exclusively with churches. We do not use generic nonprofit survey tools. Every step is designed for the unique relational and spiritual dynamics of a faith community.
Discovery Conversation
We begin with your pastor and leadership team. We review your giving history, understand your vision, assess congregational health, and identify the individuals whose voices carry the most weight in your church.
Case for Support Development
We help you sharpen a preliminary case the why behind your campaign that can be clearly presented to interviewees and tested for resonance before a single dollar is asked for.
Confidential Member Interviews
An Ascend Stewardship consultant conducts private, 30–60 minute interviews with 20–40 key stakeholders: top givers, board members, volunteer leaders, and engaged congregation members. Their feedback is candid because it is confidential.
Congregational Survey (where applicable)
For larger churches or more complex campaigns, we extend broader listening through a structured survey to capture sentiment across a wider cross-section of the congregation.
Analysis and Report
We compile findings into a clear written report with our recommendations including a suggested goal range, an assessment of leadership and giving readiness, identified risks, and a proposed campaign timeline.
Leadership Presentation
We present the findings directly to your pastor and board not in a written report left for you to interpret alone, but in a live conversation that answers hard questions and charts the path forward.
What the Interviews Reveal
The heart of every feasibility study is the confidential interview typically 30–60 minutes, one-on-one, conducted by an Ascend Stewardship consultant with key members of your church. Because the interviewer is a trusted third party, people say what they would never say in a board meeting or a Sunday conversation.
Your Real Giving Capacity
Not what people say they give but a projected picture of what your congregation can commit over three years when asked sacrificially, in faith, toward a compelling vision.
Member Unity Around the Vision
Whether your congregation genuinely believes in the project or has quiet concerns. Divisions that go unaddressed in planning become public during a campaign.
Who Your Campaign Leaders Are
The names of men and women who will step up to give first, lead volunteer teams, and carry the campaign. These are your most valuable discovery.
Concerns and Objections Upfront
Timing issues, trust questions, competing priorities, or theology around debt the study surfaces these privately, before they surface publicly.
The Strength of Your Case for Support
Whether your vision is communicated clearly enough to motivate generosity, or whether it needs refinement before you can ask anyone to give sacrificially.
A Defensible Campaign Goal
A specific goal range your board can commit to, your congregation can believe, and your consultant can build a campaign plan around with confidence.
What You Receive: The Feasibility Study Report
At the end of the process, you receive a comprehensive written report not a deck of vague takeaways, but a pastoral-facing document your leadership can act on immediately.
What the Report Includes
- Congregation giving capacity estimate
- Member support level for the proposed project
- Volunteer leadership potential
- Identified concerns or objections
- Case for support strength assessment
- Realistic campaign goal range
- Recommended next steps
What You Walk Away With
- Confidence to move forward or clarity on what to fix first
- A goal your board can stand behind and your congregation can believe in
- Knowledge of who your campaign leaders and lead givers likely are
- Answers to the hard questions before the campaign begins
- A documented plan your consultant can execute from day one
